GTL Diesel

Post by PKalle » Sat Oct 08, 2022 6:45 pm

Good evening

Does anybody have experienced with driving on GTL Diesel?

I am interested in knowing if ex. soot mass is developing slower - if any at all.

Also if there is any pros and cons.

Best regards
Peter

By my side no.

Is this fuel usable in any engine or only if officially supported by the producer?

Should to my knowledge be useable in all diesel engines. Not all brands, and models is supported - but more and more is comming on the list.
Very clean fuel, gives more smooth engine, cetan around 75

GTL Diesel (aka premium diesel or ultimate diesel) can imho be used in every Diesel engine without restrictions. My investigations show, that regenerations are necessary a little bit less frequent (GTL burns with a little less soot).

There is another diesel, called "HVO" which is NOT compatible/recommended with all diesel engines

I have been refueling my Passat 2.0 TDI exclusively with HVO100 diesel for around 2,000 km and researched the impact on soot mass and oil ash.

GTL/HVO fuels indeed produce significantly less soot compared to conventional diesel. However, this has no effect on oil ash, since soot is completely burned during regeneration.

The amount of oil ash in the DPF depends entirely on the engine oil, because oil contains additives (detergents, anti-wear agents → calcium, zinc, phosphorus, magnesium, sulfur). These compounds form non-combustible ash that accumulates in the filter over time.

To minimize oil ash build-up, the best choice is an Ultra-Low SAPS oil.

In conclusion, GTL/HVO does not reduce ash accumulation in the DPF, but it helps by lowering soot formation in the EGR system and intake manifold.

I use VW 509.00 0W-20 oil to ensure minimal ash generation and HVO100 to keep my TDI running clean.
